A room in which shadowy shapes flit around.
A huge canvas on an easel, facing away from the onlookers.
Curiosity is engaged in a revealing game of emotions.
The interplay of light and shade creates its own environment,
contemplative and introspective.

Long, rigid, austere.
Defined volumes.
Ecclesiastical austerity in counterpoint with rich decoration.
Worked collars, localised asymmetric appliqué.

The most nostalgic of Portuguese
designers was born in Cascais - where he still lives - in 1966.
The city honoured him in 2000 with the "Municipal Cultural
Merit Medal".
He is appreciated for his visual neo-Romantic style.
His first collection was showed in 1986, and he opened his first
retail outlet in 1990. He has regularly exhibited collections.
TENENTE has taken part in the GAUDI salons (Barcelona); NOUVEL
ESPACE-SEHM (Paris); IGEDO: PORTUGAL FASHION (San Paulo, Brazil)
as well as being a regular at MODALISBOA. His talents have led
to his being invited to show at numerous exhibitions, such as
"Silent Life" (Capuchos Convent, Lisbon, 2001); "1900-2000:
A Century of Fashion" (Costume Museum, Lisbon); "Barbie
Fashion" (Toy Museum, Sintra, Portugal); and "Costume
- a Work of Art" (The Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon). In
addition, he has taken part in the "European Young Designers
Show" at the British Fashion Council, London and the travelling
exhibition "Tradition and Quality" which was shown
in London, Copenhagen, Paris and Amsterdam.

He has also worked extensively
in the world of entertainment. In the world of dance he has
designed costumes for - among many others - the Rita Judas/Portuguese
Contemporary Ballet Company ballet "Latitudes"; for
"Neatnet" by Clara Andermatt; for "Mapmaking
for Common Places" by Rui Horta and for "Petals"
and "Makeba" by Benvindo Fonseca - all for Lisbon's
Gulbenkian company. Turning to theatre, he has designed for
Jorge Ferreira de Vasconcelos' "Euphrosine Comedy";
"Sabina Freire" by Teixeira Gomes; (both of these
for the Maizum Theatre) and for Shakespeare's "King Lear"
by the Cascais Experimental Theatre Company, among many others.
In addition, TENENTE designed the uniforms for Portugal's EXPO
'98 workforce.
1997 saw him win three important prizes: "Globo de Ouro",
"Look '97" and the "Nova Gente Trophy."
